They
live lives that give meaning to the word, overindulging.
And yet many of them believe that if we cannot come up
with a way to protect what is theirs, that the rest
of society should willingly give up "due process of the
law."
I do not pity the rich THAT much.
The 14th
amendment guarantees us all "due process of the law." This means
that the government cannot just take away something, unless it has
been proven in a court of law that we have done something that
actually deems it.
There are already laws on the books that make online piracy
(the selling of other people's work) illegal. However it is up to
the courts, not some bureaucrat in Washington, D.C. to decide if
someone is breaking the law and if so, what action should take
place. "Due process of the law" is our right.
The Piracy Act
would not only lead to shutting down sites because of false
piracy claims, but it would also lead to shutting down sites
for other claims. We know there are people who desire the
government to have the power to shut down sites that "offend"
special interest groups. This act would be just one step away from
such a thing happening.
Infringing on the rights of others,
is and should never be an
option. Let the courts do their
job.
